...Rome's churches are filled with religious relics that you might not notice if you don't know what to look for. Relics can be anything - a piece of cloth related to a saint, chains, shards from the holy cross or manger or even actual body parts. ...La Quintana, a jousting tournament with medieval roots, is held the first Sunday of August in Ascoli Piceno, a pretty medieval town in central Italy's Marche region. You'll have to pay admission to see the actual jousting but the festival also includes processions with participants dressed in medieval costume both before and after the jousting, food, music, and fireworks at the end.

...Castel Sant' Angelo, built as a tomb for Emperor Hadrian in the second century, was used as a fortress until it became a papal residence in the 14th century.
